Water as the source of all life: A visually powerful puppet theater for the whole family tells of inequalities in the distribution of life's resources.

Parole d'eau / Water Words invites us to perceive water in a new way: as a precious resource, as a connecting element and as a carrier of memories, voices and stories. The theater experience for young audiences aged six and up is intended to arouse curiosity and expand the imagination without providing simple answers. Two women, two worlds, two perspectives: One grew up in a region where water, snow and ice are omnipresent. The other knows water as something that must be sought, carried and shared. The long-standing collaboration between the Senegalese artist Mamby Mawine and the Canadian puppeteer Hélène Ducharme has resulted in a poetic puppet theater about an element that has always determined our lives and whose importance is often underestimated in this country. Water does not appear here as an abstract theme, but as a very personal part of life: It is inscribed in bodies, as a storage substance that carries memories and habits. The artists give the audience access to a perception that reveals a whole cosmos of water in us and in our world. On stage, they use theatrical means to bring water to life. Water thus consists of materials, objects and bodies. Contemporary live music, played on traditional West African instruments, gives water a voice. Together, these elements conjure up a world in which water flows, is missing, evaporates, freezes and returns again and again. And it shows the people who carry it, search for it, share it and miss it. With poetic bitterness, the production shows the dependence of all life on water, right down to the fringes of existence. Mawine and Ducharme tell of unequal living conditions, of responsibility and from their female perspectives. Their gaze is open, the aesthetics playful and carried by subtle humor.
