Olia Lialina's exhibition online since 1996 provides a comprehensive insight into the work of the net art pioneer with works from the past 30 years.
As part of the first generation of Net Art artists, Lialina used the technical components of the Internet from the very beginning to create browser-based works that contributed significantly to the establishment of a completely new artistic medium and a new immateriality in art.
Early on, she explored both the narrative possibilities of the web and the phenomena of an online culture that was only just beginning to form and develop its own structures and forms of existence. Like a digital archaeologist, she archives and preserves the aesthetic potential of these beginnings in many works and series.
Her works show that the web was initially a heterogeneous, democratic space that both challenged and enabled the creativity of users and individual forms of expression. It was only when it was appropriated by commercial interests, combined with the premise of "user-friendliness", that the smooth user interfaces that characterize the Internet as we know it today emerged.
Olia Lialina's practice thus always resonates with a media-critical dimension that reveals what usually remains hidden. Her works are also a plea to users to empower themselves and to understand the technical mechanisms behind digital user interfaces in order to re-appropriate the free and decentralized character of the World Wide Web.
