Маяк (Mayak) - Russian/Ukrainian for lighthouse, a tower or building with a strong light as a navigation aid for ships at sea to avoid danger.
Маяк (Mayak) - nuclear reprocessing plant in the city of Ozersk (Russia), which was the site of several catastrophic nuclear accidents.
Based on the phenomenon that one word can evoke completely different associations in two different countries, the new dance piece MAYAK by choreographer Kenji Shinohe deals with the importance of perceiving and understanding different perspectives on one and the same phenomenon.
As a universal language, dance is both an abstract means of communication and an object of contemplation. Like the rotating light of a lighthouse, which can illuminate different places and thus help to navigate between different points of view, but always leaves parts of the overall picture in the dark at times, MAYAK allows the audience to view one and the same dance piece from different angles.
MAYAK is a co-production with Tanz Station and INSEL in Wuppertal and is funded by the Landesbüro freie Darstellende Künste NRW, the Kulturbüro der Stadt Wuppertal, the Bergischer Kulturfonds and the Sparkassenfonds für Kunst und Kultur in Wuppertal. Made possible and supported by the Jackstädt Foundation, Barmenia and the Kalkwerke Oetelshofen Foundation.
