Documentary film
We are showing the film "Sex Worker" on the occasion of International Whores' Day. The day commemorates 2 June 1975, when sex workers occupied the Saint-Nizier church in Lyon to protest against police violence, criminalization and society's silence. More than 50 years later, sex workers still prefer to be the object of political debate instead of being listened to and included in the debate on changes to the law. The so-called "Nordic model", which criminalizes the demand for sexual services, consistently ignores the voices of those affected - and yet is given much more space in public discourse. Sex workers become the silent backdrop to a debate that goes over their heads.
Sobo Swobodnik's documentary film counters this. He accompanies Berlin sex worker Lena Morgenroth for several months as she goes about her work and everyday life - and gives her what political debates deny her: space, complexity, dignity. The result is a respectful portrait of a woman who is in control of her own life.
