Hidden worlds. What do lichens and mosses tell us about climate change and the urban climate?
Workshop with Klaus Fritze and Dr. Norbert Stapper
We rarely notice the micro-gardens of mosses and lichens around us. It is only through a magnifying glass that mosses reveal themselves as small green land plants, and lichens catch our eye with their delight in color and sometimes bizarre shapes. Lichens are communities of fungi, algae or cyanobacteria that can even colonize extreme habitats such as arctic rocks, deserts, trees, letterboxes or window panes. Mosses and lichens can also be found in the big city, and different species grow here in the "miniature gardens" depending on the living conditions. Conversely, they tell us how polluted the air is, how overheated the city center is or how fast climate change is progressing.
