grotesk.group guest exhibition: BETTER

grotesk.group presents BETTER - a discourse-oriented audiovisual installation about self-optimization, ideals of beauty and the creeping loss of identity in an increasingly technologized world.

The starting point are unaltered studio recordings by Meklit Fekadu, which are transformed in a multi-stage AI-supported process from recognizable portraits into increasingly idealized and ultimately absurd visual worlds. Accompanying voices open up an auditory interior that reinforces the visual dissolution.

The work poses a quiet, uncomfortable question: what remains of people when optimization determines everything?

First shown at cank berlin neukölln in 2025 with sold-out guided tours, the Düsseldorf edition expands the installation to include a complete auditory level, a panel discussion and four interactive tours.

The grotesk.group is an interdisciplinary art collective from Düsseldorf, founded in June 2022 by Harald Schaack, Denis Sokolowski, Nelly Selcho and Tim Hunkemöller. At the interface of art, technology and social debate, the collective explores digitalization, AI, public space, power structures and democratic participation.
