Girls Under Glass - 40 years of musical independence

Girls Under Glass were founded in Hamburg in 1986 - at a time of profound socio-political upheaval, but beyond clearly defined musical scenes.

While gothic and dark wave were increasingly developing stylistic conventions at the end of the 1980s, the band pursued an independent approach from the very beginning: dark, experimental, emotional - but without genre clichés.

Founded by singer Tom Lücke, keyboardist Hauke Harms and guitarist Volker Zacharias, Girls Under Glass developed an unmistakable sound language early on, which drew on influences such as 80s wave, early post-punk and experimental dark electronics rather than the classic gothic canon. Even the early releases - including the albums Humus (1988) and Flowers (1989) - made it clear that simple categorizations would not work here.

After Tom Lücke left the band in 1990, Volker Zacharias took over the vocals and songwriting and had a lasting impact on the band's sound. With the album Positive (1991), produced by Rodney Orpheus (The Cassandra Complex), Girls Under Glass established their central strength to this day: exceptional songwriting that combines atmospheric depth, melody and stylistic openness. The following albums (Darius, Christus, Crystals & Stones) consistently continued this development without repeating themselves.

Even stylistic outbursts - such as the guitar-heavy Firewalker (1997) - were always part of an artistic process that saw change not as a risk, but as a necessity. With Equilibrium (1999), Minddiver (2001) and Zyklus (2004), the band returned to a focused, multi-layered sound that also allowed for early influences. After a long creative break and further personnel changes, Girls Under Glass finally made an impressive return with the album Backdraft (2023) - a work that shows that creative relevance has no expiry date.

After the anniversary year 2026, Girls Under Glass will open another chapter in 2027: Club tour for the new album!

In the last 20 years, Girls Under Glass have only played a handful of club concerts. It is precisely this direct proximity between band and audience that they now want to deliberately revive.

The 2027 club tour offers one of the few opportunities to experience Girls Under Glass in an intimate setting - close, intense and beyond big stage routines.

For long-time fans and new listeners alike, this tour is more than nostalgia: it is an invitation to a shared, direct and intimate live experience together with a band that has reinvented itself time and again over 40 years - without ever losing its own core. In addition to the well-known classics and live highlights, songs from the new album, which will be released in spring 2027 via Dependent Records, will also be presented.
