Filmvorführung BUTENLAND

In the organizer's words:

Together with the HSG Tierrechte | CAU Kiel, PROVIEH will show the film BUTENLAND on June 7, 2026 at 5:00 pm. (Admission from 16:30)

After the film, there will be an opportunity for discussion and to take action against the tethering of cattle in agriculture, from which around 1 million animals in Germany still suffer, with a postcard campaign.

Watch the movie:

With their project Hof Butenland, former dairy farmer Jan Gerdes and animal welfare activist Karin Mück have created a place where there are no more farm animals: A peaceful coexistence that seems almost utopian.

As a third-generation dairy farmer, Jan Gerdes looks after thirty cows on his farm in northern Germany and successfully sells organic milk and cheese. When he has to sell his cows to the abattoir as his milk yield declines, he decides to give up his farm.

On the day when all the cows are to be taken to the abattoir, there is no room for the last twelve. On the spur of the moment, Jan Gerdes and his partner Karin Mück decide to keep these animals so that they can spend the rest of their lives on the farm. This is the birth of Hof Butenland - the first cow retirement home in Germany.

Filmmaker Marc Pierschel accompanied the couple, their senior cows Paul, Uschi and Lillja and other animals with his camera for two years. The result is an empathetic film about people and animals living through beautiful and difficult times together.
