The civil war is over - but for Django, peace never began. In the dusty ruins of the West, he emerges like a shadow from the past and executes a group of former officers who once betrayed their own men. Each of them dies in the same eerie way: announced by a gravedigger and accompanied by the question of whether Django is perhaps no longer among the living.

With DJANGO IL BASTARDO, Sergio Garrone created one of the darkest and most idiosyncratic spaghetti westerns of the late 1960s. The film combines a classic revenge story with an almost supernatural atmosphere and is considered an early forerunner of the "zombie western" motif, which Clint Eastwood's HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER (1973) would later pick up on. An eerie western between death knell, civil war trauma and apocalyptic justice.
