Based on Abbé Prévost's novel Histoire du Chevalier Des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut, Manon is a key work of literary ballet, dense, dramatic and emotionally merciless. MacMillan's view of his heroine is as precise as it is painfully honest: Manon not only fears poverty, she is ashamed of it. And in a society in which poverty is tantamount to a slow death, every decision becomes a question of dignity, security and freedom.
