Igor Stravinsky shaped 20th-century music and, following his successes in ballet, turned to neoclassicism—as a counterpoint to Romantic opulence. His “Symphonies d’instruments à vent” (1920) unfold with a concentrated sound and are at the same time a tribute to Claude Debussy.

Friedrich Gulda breaks boundaries: funky grooves, rock-inspired elements, and romantic gestures fuse in his Cello Concerto into a wild mix that at times evokes a big band and at others, folk music.

Robert Schumann, too, connects music and life: The Rhine was the setting for his triumphs and crises. The Third Symphony was composed during a happy period, yet its shifting moods already betray inner tensions.
