Guardians of the Galaxy. Concert Suite

A concert where, for once, you don't have to guiltily make your smartphone disappear, but rather keep it close at hand, is already a popular choice. In Tan Dun's Passacaglia: Secret of Wind and Birds , the cell phone is expressly encouraged! By playing an audio file (QR code below), the audience itself becomes part of the sound and is integrated into an orchestral fabric with which Tan Dun invokes the sounds of nature, of wind, sea and bird calls. And this late-night evening makes no attempt to adhere to classical rules of decorum. In the trombone concerto Three Muses in Video Games , written for the virtuoso Jörgen van Rijen, the tempo of digital game worlds meets the distant sonority of ancient Asian instruments before the musical world of video games is tested for its suitability for concert performance. The emotional range of these pieces is immense and extends from witty ideas to the dreamy contemplation of a lullaby to great pathos.

The decisive factor, however, is not the pretty breach of the rules, but the location. The salt warehouse of the Hansa coking plant is not a concert hall that does a bit of roughing it for one evening. It is an industrial monument with a force of its own. The stage and the audience are not polite strangers here. This is precisely where the humor of this format lies: it wants to make music experienceable in a different way - more relaxed, more experimental and with open ears for everything that lies beyond the well-rehearsed concert rituals.
