You walk through Wuppertal - and suddenly you hear voices. They are thoughts, feelings, monologues from inside people from all parts of the city that normally remain inaudible. This is precisely the idea behind the project: an urban soundscape, fed by the voices of the people who live here. We invite you to share your thoughts, feelings and inner monologues with us - anonymously, openly, poetically, rawly, spontaneously or thoughtfully. What's happening in your head when you walk through Wuppertal? What moves you, who are you and what do you wish for?
A choir is created from the voices of many. Not a choir in the classic sense, but a vibrant, flowing network of personalities - a polyphonic sound collage that you can later bring to life yourself.
Under the direction of media artist Horst Konietzny, a soundtrack will be created from the inner monologues of the participants, making the diversity and inner richness of the city's inhabitants audible.
Horst Konietzny already realized the audio theatre production Unser Leben ist voller Schall und Raserei in Wuppertal in 2022. It was performed as part of the festival under construction in preparation for the Pina Bausch Center in the Waldfrieden Sculpture Park. The audio installation was created on the basis of long conversations with former dancers of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch about their collaboration and creative engagement with Pina Bausch.
It's very simple. Use your smartphone to record and send us your interview or your own voice or sound as an audio file by email to Stimmen@1000Stimmen.de. Make sure that each recording is no longer than 100 seconds. Also assign a suitable file name so that we can view the material more easily.
If you would like to delve deeper into working with voice, sound and urban storytelling, you can also take part in a workshop. The next workshop will take place on Saturday, May 30, 2026. Binding registration by e-mail to: Workshop@1000Stimmen.de.
1000 Voices is an initiative of the Forum Wupperbogen for the Pina Bausch Center under construction and sees itself as an open participation project. The Pina Bausch Center is a project of the City of Wuppertal, funded by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, in cooperation with the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch and the Pina Bausch Foundation.
