"Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend": Showgirl Lorelei Lee has a materialistic attitude, so she and her friend Dorothy travel to Europe on a ship to marry the rich Gus. His father, however, suspects Lorelei has monetary motives, which is why he sets a detective on her. The fact that Lorelei befriends an old millionaire on board and that the detective and Dorothy fall in love does nothing to clear things up.
Jane Russell was cast as the star of the film and her salary was ten times higher than that of Marilyn Monroe. But Monroe's career took off with this role as the superficially attractive Lorelei, who only uses her wits when things get dicey: Marilyn Monroe became a quintessential sex symbol.
