Reassessing Transatlantic Relations – From Trade to Security and Defense

Das sagt der/die Veranstalter:in:

We are looking forward to a highly topical conversation with Julia Friedlander, CEO of Atlantik-Brücke.‌

The transatlantic relationship is confronting a period of profound geopolitical and economic uncertainty. Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, the conflict between the United States and Iran, and intensifying global trade rivalries have exposed the interdependence of security policy and economic stability. Inflation, higher energy and transportation costs, and supply chain disruptions have placed increasing pressure on governments and households alike, while shifting priorities in Washington continue to raise questions about the future direction of U.S. leadership within the transatlantic alliance. Against this backdrop, European governments are not only reassessing defense cooperation and dependencies, but also debating how to strengthen economic competitiveness and respond to growing social and political pressures.

What impact will ongoing geopolitical conflicts have on economic stability in the United States and Europe? How are evolving U.S. trade and foreign policy priorities reshaping the transatlantic relationship and the global order? And how should Germany and Europe respond?

We look forward to discussing these and further questions with:

Julia Friedlander joined Atlantik-Brücke as chief executive officer in June 2022. Before coming to Berlin, she spent two years at the Atlantic Council as the founding director of the Economic Statecraft Initiative. From April 2017 to July 2019, she was detailed to the White House as the Director for the European Union, Southern Europe, and Economic Affairs at the National Security Council, where she coordinated U.S. executive branch policy on transatlantic relations and the European Union and staffing the national security advisor. Before joining the Treasury in 2015, she held multiple analytical positions within the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), focusing on global economic stability and energy security. Ms. Friedlander holds a BA in European History from Princeton University and an MA in International Economics and International Relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.
