Madeline Johnston ist eine autodidaktische Multiinstrumentalistin und Toningenieurin, die heute im Süden Colorados lebt. Zuvor war sie über ein Jahrzehnt lang in Denver ansässig, wo sie ihren unverwechselbaren Sound entwickelte und sich intensiv in der lokalen Kunst- und Musikszene engagierte. Ihr Projekt Midwife entstand 2014 während ihrer Zeit im legendären DIY-Kulturraum Rhinoceropolis.

Live ist Johnston für ihre reduzierte, emotional aufgeladene Mischung aus experimentellem Pop und atmosphärischer Klangkunst bekannt, die ganze Räume in gespannte Stille versetzen kann. Auf ihren Aufnahmen erschafft sie vielschichtige, dichte Klanglandschaften und besetzt damit eine ganz eigene Nische innerhalb der schweren und experimentellen Musik.

Ihren Stil beschreibt sie selbst als „Heaven Metal“ – emotionale Musik über Zerstörung, Verlust und Katharsis. Im Zentrum ihres Songwritings steht die Trauer in all ihren Facetten und Erscheinungsformen. Mit großer Sensibilität und eindringlicher Intensität erforscht Johnston die unterschiedlichen Gesichter von Verlust, Schmerz und Heilung.
