About Us

Theater im Depot is a workspace, production facility, and performance venue for the independent performing arts in Dortmund. Housed in the Depot Cultural Center, a historic tram depot in Dortmund’s Nordstadt district, it provides a stage for local communities and artists as well as for the professional independent scene from the Ruhr Metropolis and North Rhine-Westphalia, and for artists with national and international reach.

Under the motto “Dance – Theater – Performance – Laboratory – Encounter,” it does not see itself merely as a performance venue but rather brings together a wide variety of aesthetic approaches, audience groups, and levels of programmatic reflection on the present. Together with Dortmund’s urban community, it cultivates and establishes structures for an independent arts and culture scene that makes access possible for many, promotes exchange and encounters, provides space for experimentation and freedom, and contributes to community building. The Theater im Depot sees itself as a social practice: a space for participation, co-creation, and cultural diversity.
