The Residenztheater on Max-Joseph-Platz is the main venue of the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel and one of the most traditional and largest spoken theaters with an ensemble of over 50 actors and more than 450 employees in the German-speaking world. Its history begins in the 18th century as the Electoral Court and National Theater. It has three venues: the Residenztheater on Max-Joseph-Platz, the Cuvilliéstheater (@Cuvilliéstheater) and the Marstall (@Marstall), all in the immediate vicinity of the Residenz in the heart of Munich.

Andreas Beck has been artistic director since 2019. Under his artistic direction, the Residenztheater stands for an ensemble theater that focuses on contemporary drama with world premieres and new plays alongside the cultivation of a classical repertoire. Classical material and texts are questioned from the here and now and are rewritten or adapted.
