What is a Weltacker?Why 2,000 m²?
And what will happen at the Weltacker?
If you’re asking yourself these questions, the Weltacker opening is the perfect place for you. Whether you’re young or old, you’re invited to learn about the themes of the Weltacker and experience them firsthand.
What exactly is a Weltacker?
If we divide the approximately 1.6 billion hectares of global farmland by the number of people on Earth, each person gets 2,000 m². That is the share of farmland to which we are all mathematically entitled. This land must grow what feeds and sustains us: wheat for bread, potatoes, cabbage, carrots, plus corn and soybeans as feed crops for animals, as well as sugar beets for the sugar in tea or coffee, cotton for T-shirts, sunflowers for cooking oil, and rapeseed for biodiesel. These 2,000 m² are now visible and accessible in Dortmund—on our new World Field!
The development of the Weltacker is funded by HORIZON Europe as part of the REDESIGN project. The Dortmund Food Policy Council is an active partner in the REDESIGN project and is implementing the Weltacker as a “real-world laboratory”—a place for learning and dialogue.
The educational program at the Weltacker is implemented by Querwaldein Dortmund e.V., the Schulte-Tigges educational farm, and education coordinator Claudia Strzelecki, and is funded by the EU’s “Turn The Tables” grant program.
