PICK OF THE DAY

In the organizer's words:
John Davidson, a Scot born in 1971, has suffered since childhood from a particularly severe form of Tourette syndrome, which causes physical tics and involuntary verbal outbursts. For a long time, he faced a lack of understanding from his family and those around him; he was ostracized and beaten. It wasn’t until a nurse friend began helping him that things started to improve, and he began to experience acceptance.
The British biographical film “I Swear” tells the true, touching life story of Scottish Tourette’s activist John Davidson. The film skillfully balances emotional drama with a heartwarming underdog comedy, chronicling his journey from social exclusion to becoming a respected public figure.
+++
Director Kirk Jones directs the biopic in an unsentimental, bold manner, infused with plenty of British humor, which is why the film is perceived as a heartwarming tragicomedy. The real-life John Davidson went on to become one of Britain’s best-known Tourette’s advocates and was even awarded the Order of the British Empire by the Queen for his tireless efforts to raise awareness.
