“Schifferklavier, Quetschkommode, Zerrwanst”—the list of nicknames for the accordion is long. But these days, the “pig organ” is no longer found exclusively among folk musicians and sailors; it’s also featured in classical concert programs and, in particular, in contemporary music. Popular internationally across many cultures, the accordion also plays a significant role in Germany and was named Instrument of the Year in 2026.

The seventh edition of theSTATIONENconcert series presents the accordion in a quartet formation:  Dorrit Bauerecker, Marko Kassl, Katharina Koenig, and Florian Stadler will perform a program of new music, including world premieres by Carlie Schoonees and Francisco Dominguez, a winning piece from this year’s “Jugend komponiert” competition, as well as works by Willem Schulz, Dietmar Bonnen, and Katharina Koenig. The ensemble will also perform improvisations. 

Since 2012, STATIONEN—a working group of local new music associations within the State Music Council—has been organizing a tour through several cities in North Rhine-Westphalia. As in previous years, a school project will accompany the concerts in 2026. In each city, members of the ensemble will work with participating schools to spark an interest in new music.  Aachen, Cologne, Bielefeld, Münster, Essen—in five locations, 4 bellows will bring 4,000 reeds to life: concentrated accordion power for STATIONEN 2026
