In the organizer's words:
100 Years of “Slawa”
“He is an outstanding cellist and a very natural musician who always plays with total commitment and expression,” Jan Vogler raved about his young fellow cellist Petar Pejčić. With his program at Rising Stars, Pejčić celebrates the 100th birthday of one of the most legendary cellists of all time: Mstislav “Slawa” Rostropovich. Without Rostropovich, 20th-century music would be deprived of many significant works, for he commissioned new music from the greatest composers. Among them are Dmitri Shostakovich and Sergei Prokofiev, who wrote not only sonatas of great sonic power for their compatriot, but also intimate cello sonatas. The Argentine Astor Piazzolla dedicated his spirited “Le Grand Tango” to Rostropovich.
