“There Are No Gray Areas”: Recognizing Patterns of Abuse of Power in Art and Culture
A workshop by Sara Hassan
October 4, 2026 | 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. | Zeche Carl
Abuses of power exist everywhere—because structural inequality exists everywhere. But we can learn to recognize how power dynamics manifest within a specific system and how they can contribute to a culture that fosters harassment.
This workshop therefore focuses on how we can identify patterns of abuse of power in general and how they manifest specifically in the arts and culture sector. To this end, we’ll examine which specific characteristics make it likely that people will abuse their power, and which circumstances, hierarchies, and power imbalances fuel these dynamics.
Using the Red Flag System—an early-warning system for power abuse—participants will learn to consider various levels when deciphering power-abusive dynamics. To this end, we analyze components of the respective environment, strategies employed by those who abuse power, actions taken by the social environment, and reactions exhibited by those affected.
The goal of this workshop is for participants to develop their own early warning system and to be able to recognize and identify warning signs of power abuse and, ideally, develop initial strategies to counter it.
The workshop is FREE. The number of spots is limited to approximately 20 participants.
Pleaseregister for the workshop by September 20, 2026, by emailing mail@peng-festival.de
