Paul Bungardt — Flaggen, Plätze, Listen, Lücken

In the organizer's words:

Whether transcended as a surface, written on a flag, spoken into a microphone, listed or drawn on wallpaper, signs are omnipresent in Paul Bungardt's work.
As symbols of different concepts of the order of our surroundings, he examines them in his works for their content-related or structural grammar and translates them into often spatial arrangements using changing materials. In the process, the new orders become starting points for non-linear narratives that reflect the legibility and origin of the signs taken up. The resulting constellations invite the viewer to think further, to mentally rearrange and reorganize and expand the narratives that emerge from them.

Some of the works shown in the exhibition take up traces and concepts of existing or fictional urban spaces. In the work In the Gardens of the Palace of Kai-ping-fu, emblems become starting points for the invention of cities and their stories. In Oú je n'ai d'ailleurs jamais été, the outlines of squares form a new cartographic space in which only individual memory offers orientation, while photographs of comments written on the museum wall become a cabinet of signs.
In other works, language becomes the subject in order to provide a description of a discarded work, to examine military codes and their meaning on the basis of MIKE IN THE MIDDLE or to shed light on the process of exhibition making.
