Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) is a megastar - glamorous and incomparable on stage, but exhausted and lonely behind the scenes. Overwhelmed by her highly anticipated stage comeback, she seeks refuge with her former friend and companion Sam (Michaela Coel), a fashion designer who shaped Mother Mary's iconic style at the beginning of her career. The two women have not seen each other for many years and the break in their friendship runs deep. In her personal crisis, Mary asks Sam for help: she is to design an outfit for her upcoming comeback.

While the new costume is being created, old conflicts come to light, long-hidden secrets are revealed and deeply buried wounds resurface. As the boundaries between the present and painful memories become blurred, the two women embark on an emotional journey with an uncertain outcome.
