Paris, 1676: high society breathes a sigh of relief. With cunning and trickery, the Prefect of Police has succeeded in bringing France's most notorious poisoner to justice. The prefect's arch-enemy, the wicked witch of Paris, invites him to her house for a festive dinner.

But the evening takes a dramatic turn when it becomes clear that the series of murders is far from over. Behind the splendor of wigs, courtly glamour and gallant manners, an abyss of intrigue, greed and poisonous secrets opens up, reaching all the way into the Sun King's chambers...
