A table is an office, a border and a workplace: this play shows how human dreams are organized by bureaucracy and can fail as a result.
A table - that is the entire stage set for Mezok. With it, at it, on it and under it, Indian author and director Jyoti Dogra unfolds a contemporary drama about the world of work and the migration that is often associated with it. The table is workplace, border, authority, passageway. It is a daily meeting place and place of experience for millions of job seekers in the metropolis of Mumbai. The table is an object that structures movements, holds bodies, lets people fail and move on. Mezok is the name of an invented mountain. It stands for what people carry around with them: expectations or hopes for a better life. While forms, numbers, ID cards and permits regulate everyday life on the outside, this inner mountain remains immobile in the play. The brilliant Indian ensemble from Mumbai transforms these contrasting dynamics in a physically captivating way. With reduced gestures, voices, breath and recurring sequences, the players create a picture of systems that function while people are stuck in them. The performance captivates with a sequence of situations, loosely scattered moments that relentlessly flash up the urge for a better life. The sequence of scenes gives a constant sense of departure, new beginnings, but also of being painfully left behind. The heroes of the play are young men who drive Uber in the cities and women who have stayed at home and are torn between waiting, hope and abstinence. The concentrated staging turns their bodies into a visible interface between personal aspirations and anonymous administration. An artistically impressive image. In economically and politically ascendant India, the country with the largest population in the world, the speed of everyday life often makes people forget their humanity.
