The Schlüterhof will become a gathering place for film enthusiasts from all over the world—complete with summery drinks and snacks. The open-air festival presents six current feature films that are “box office hits” in their countries of origin but have not yet been shown on the big screen in Germany. Before the screenings, we invite you to themed spotlights to get you in the mood—with celebrity guests!

The Box Office Around the World festival presents six current feature films over two weekends in August—films that are audience favorites and box office hits in their countries of origin but have not yet been shown on the big screen in Germany.

Representatives from Berlin’s communities from Thailand, Argentina, Nigeria, Vietnam, Brazil, and India selected the films together with curator Dorothee Wenner and developed an accompanying program: Before the open-air screenings, we’ll shine a thematic spotlight on each film—featuring a star-studded lineup.

Based on a true story, the film tells of a drama of jealousy set against the backdrop of Saigon’s nightlife in the 1960s. At the center are two prominent ladies from high society: Madame Sac, the wealthy owner of a fabulous diamond collection—and a legendary establishment. Her Kim Do nightclub sparkles and sizzles in every corner, and it’s not just the ladies’ stunning wardrobes that evoke Paris. The luxurious club is a gathering place for Saigon’s underworld, who indulge themselves here every night and, in the cover of darkness, ensure that everything continues as before… In this milieu, the beautiful Cam Thanh rises in the public’s favor to become the city’s most famous dancer. But Madame Sac is as strict as she is jealous and power-hungry. When Cam Thanh tries to free herself from her dependence on Madame Sac, the two women clash, and their power struggle drags both of them into a dramatic downward spiral.

The production design alone makes this film a sensational standout in Vietnamese cinema—but the elegant recreation of Saigon’s nightlife in those years is also worth seeing for its allusions to the present.
