Michael Batz is writing a play for the Hamburger Kammerspiele about the Jewish musician Harry Hermann Spitz, who survived Auschwitz and became head of the music department at Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk—until he fell victim to a smear campaign led by Otto Nass, a former Gestapo officer and senior criminal investigator ( ).
Nass accused him of falsely claiming to be a victim of Nazi persecution and of having derived financial benefits from it. These allegations turned out to be unfounded, but the campaign had serious consequences…
