How much truth fits in a beer glass? Anja Heyelmann's "Schankmaid" transfers big social questions to a seemingly inconspicuous place: the pub. Between conversations, glances and casual comments, the author shows how deeply patriarchal structures are anchored in everyday life - often unnoticed, often trivialized.

Anja Heyelmann has been working behind the bar counter herself for over ten years and has now dedicated her first book to this special place and its guests. What comes across as an entertaining collection of short stories turns out to be an equally humorous and sharp social analysis. The pub serves as an exemplary setting for everyday sexism. It is by no means a special case, but a magnifying glass that makes visible what often goes on covertly elsewhere: in the office, in the stairwell or at parents' evening - only more subtle, more controlled, less obvious and, above all, without alcohol. Power relations are revealed in apparent trivialities, such as tips, supposedly inadvertent touches, expectations of appearance and behavior, laughing at jokes that are not jokes. The book brings together situations that often seem too banal to be taken seriously and at the same time are too present to be overlooked. Told in a relaxed, accessible language and underpinned with facts and figures, Heyelmann succeeds in making individual experiences visible as part of structural problems.

With "Schankmaid", Anja Heyelmann succeeds in creating a haunting, multi-layered work that combines subtle humor and sharp social analysis. A book that resonates long after the last glass has been emptied. It will be published by Trabanten Verlag on May 01, 2026.

Anja Heyelmann is a trained photographer and studied communication design, but her heart has belonged to gastronomy for over 10 years. She started out as a mini-jobber and is now right in the middle of the action. Where people let themselves go, they often show more than they want to. This is exactly what fascinates her: the stories, the bridges, the contradictions. On her social media channels, including on Instagram at @frustrierte.alte, she deals with topics relating to feminism, humanity and social injustice. There she talks about everything that happens between small talk and silence.
