As part of “Mannheim Reads a Book 2026”

As part of the citywide reading project “Mannheim Reads a Book” and the “einander.Aktionstage,” Bruno Akkan, a member of the acting ensemble at the National Theater Mannheim, reads from this year’s City Book, *Vatermal* (2023) by Necati Öziri. Addressing his absent father, Arda recounts his family history from his hospital bed—from the hallways of the immigration office, about that last summer before his friends disappeared, and about his mother and sister and their stories: “I want to take away your ability to ever not know who I was.” With radical honesty, he looks back on his youth in Germany: on friendships, loss, anger, and the struggle to find his place in a fractured world. The novel intertwines personal memories with social reality. A story about family, heritage, and masculinity. Nominated for the shortlist of the German Book Prize. In a moderated discussion, the themes of masculinity and the father-son relationship in the novel will be examined in greater detail and discussed with the audience. A collaboration between the National Theater Mannheim and the Mannheim Migration Advisory Board. Free admission. Please register at nationaltheater.kasse@mannheim.de or by calling 0621 1680 150.
