Lennart Schilgen - ...macht nichts! Lieder vom Schleifen und Schleifen lassen

The apartment is a mess, the world is coming to an end yet again—and Lennart Schilgen is doing... nothing! Well, okay—almost nothing. For example, he spends a lot of time thinking about all the things he isn’t doing. Everyone used to say that this kind of thing was “unproductive”—even Feldmaus Frederick—and then suddenly: Boom! Sunbeams, colors, words! Or, in Schilgen’s case: finely crafted songs about the loops and cycles we all find ourselves caught up in.

The Berlin singer-songwriter, who has taken social media by storm with, among other things, his “Reinhard Mey parody that’s to die for” (Mannheimer Morgen) and the double-edged sing-along anthem “Dafür hab ich ein Leben,” remains a master of nuances and contradictions in his fourth program as well: At times he transforms his collective inadequacy into self-empowerment; at others, he wanders in wonder—à la Simon & Garfunkel—through the magic of a tantrum.

As always, he brings along his mischievous streak, the meta-level, and poems that plow so impetuously through the language that you find yourself ecstatically surrendering to every bit of nonsense—from the unshaven tiger to the masochistic spruce. On radioeins, he now tirelessly contributes to his own poetry column as the “Verse Whisperer”—so when they say, “Lennart Schilgen does nothing!”—what they really mean is: enough to fill an entire evening. Is that nothing? You bet it is!
