Garth Erasmus is a musician, activist, and visual artist who became known in the 1980s for his stance against apartheid in South Africa. In 2018, he performedatthe FFTalongside the Hamburg-based band Kante in the performance “HouseoftheFalling Bones.” Hisfirstsolo album,“ThrenodyfortheKhoiSan,”wasreleasedon the Düsseldorf-based labelTAL. The music on this album was recorded using acoustic instruments he built himself, which bridge the gap between the indigenous music of the KhoiSan community and contemporary South Africa. In 2024,he formed theGarth ErasmusandBroken String Ensemble, consisting of Ruth May, Peter Thiessen, CarinaKhorkhordina,and Stefan Schneider.
