Joe Gloomy is the solo project of Oldenburg-based musician Joel Glanert. While he has been steadily writing and releasing music in recent years with the bands PILEA (indie pop) and Loose Lips (alternative rock), he has also accumulated more and more songs on the side that didn’t fit into either of those projects. This led to the creation of his alter ego, joe gloomy, through which Joel places greater emphasis on personality and his own distinctive style than on traditional genre boundaries. During a difficult period last year, when he had to put his other band projects on hold, he was able to complete eight songs at his own pace—songs that, parallel to the creative process, capture a whirlwind of emotions ranging from love, obsessive thoughts, fears, and hope. Joel handles everything himself—from songwriting and vocals to playing instruments and production. “Mashed Potatoes,” the first single, is a danceable, dreamy indie love song about the overwhelming feeling of being head over heels in love.
