Jamie Baum Quartet & Anke Helfrich Trio

With flutist Jamie Baum’s quartet and pianist Anke Helfrich’s trio, two ensembles come together that are seasoned veterans of every musical style (including traditional ones) and are hard to beat when it comes to their innovative, joyful approach to performance. Their leaders are among the most distinctive voices of our time as both soloists and composers. Both have earned their stripes on the New York scene, and both have studied under great masters—Anke Helfrich studied with Kenny Barron, among others, while Jamie Baum studied with Jaki Byard and Richie Beirach. Both have shared the stage with jazz’s top-tier artists throughout their careers and have released outstanding albums. To introduce all of their equally talented fellow musicians would go beyond the scope of this article—but special mention should be made of Leo Genovese, who has worked with Esperanza Spalding and Wayne Shorter, and Dietmar Fuhr, who has played with David Liebman and Kurt Rosenwinkel, among others.
