High on Fire

High on Fire, a metal band from Oakland that has been around since 1998, is known for its aggressive, monumental sound—described by The New York Times as “a sludgy resin distilled from 30 years of super-hard rock history.” Frontman Matt Pike emphasizes their niche status, far removed from mainstream radio. The band won a Grammy in 2018 for “Best Metal Performance” (Electric Messiah), joining the ranks of legends such as Black Sabbath and Metallica. Bassist Jeff Matz called this an unexpected honor, one that, however, did not change their artistic vision. Their latest album, “Cometh the Storm,” features the title track “Burning Down”—a quintessential High on Fire anthem: intense, riff-driven, and fresh, yet deeply rooted in their unmistakable style. Producer Kurt Ballou and the band’s harmonious dynamics shape this project, reflecting both modern challenges and their enduring energy.
