Hedda Gabler

On the surface, everything is perfect: a perfect honeymoon, a perfect dream home (where her father’s gun collection is a thrilling source of fun), her husband a rising star in the literary world—Hedda, née Gabler, and Jørgen Tesman have made it! Yet nothing in this world is stable. Wounds, burning longings, and the constant rebellion against a life that is too confining, too bland, too predictable—all of this create intense inner tension within Hedda and a ravenous craving for intensity and escape. When her former lover Ejlert Løvborg and his supporter Thea Elvsted show up, Hedda, driven by jealousy and inner turmoil, begins to sabotage their relationship and Løvborg’s future. A dangerous game for a moment of freedom and power—whatever the cost, to whomever or whatever it may be.

The Norwegian Henrik Ibsen wrote, as he himself put it, “to portray people”; his characters are full of ambivalence, longings, and abysses. With Hedda Gabler, he created a protagonist who was unusual for her time, a fact that led to a theatrical scandal following the world premiere in Munich in 1891. “Hedda Gabler” portrays an anti-heroine who consistently defies conventions, thereby shaking the supposed order of her world. A captivating play about freedom and self-assertion, with which Mille Maria Dalsgaard continues her exploration of naturalism, which began in 2025 with “Miss Julie at Work.” Her version captivates with its insight into Hedda’s inner world, enriching the original text with additional layers through the use of music.
