Gina Hitsch und Martin Freres: Das Ding ist: Man kann auch anders über Rassismus sprechen
In the organizer's words:
The thing is: This reading is a must!
In this book, Gina Hitsch and Martin Freres explore a question that concerns many people: Why are conversations about racism often so difficult—and how can they be conducted more constructively?
Using numerous examples from their daily lives, their relationship, and their work, the two authors show how misunderstandings, insecurities, and differing experiences can shape discussions about racism. They examine situations on social media as well as conversations among friends, within families, or in the workplace. Drawing on their personal experiences, they explain how prejudices arise, why people often react defensively in such conversations, and how a respectful exchange can succeed despite differing perspectives. Instead of assigning blame or offering simple answers, they emphasize openness, self-reflection, and empathy.
The book combines personal stories with social observations and invites readers to reflect on their own approaches to racism and discrimination. It highlights ways to navigate difficult conversations without downplaying everyday racism and advocates for greater understanding in an increasingly polarized society.
