Street Philosophy Instead of an Ivory Tower: studio geist Celebrates Hegel’s Birthday with the “Fenster-Fest” on Eberhardstraße

While the traditional wine village celebrates just a few streets away, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel’s historic birthplace becomes an open platform for the city’s diverse society. On Thursday, August 27, 2026, starting at 6:00 p.m., studio geist will transform the Hegel-Haus Museum into an urban performance space. Under the motto “Window Festival,” we’ll take over Eberhardstraße—closed to traffic—with a clear stance, live performances from the windows, jazz, guided tours, and a light and sound installation. Philosophy doesn’t belong behind thick museum walls, but where life pulsates: on the asphalt. The late-medieval building becomes a resonant space to bring Hegel’s work into the present, shed light on its blind spots, and turn the street into a place where democracy is lived out.

Program Highlights at a Glance:

Democracy Kiosk (6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.): The ground-floor window becomes a kiosk of discourse. The motto is: opinions instead of merchandise. Anyone who answers questions about social coexistence as they pass by pays with arguments instead of euros. Inspired by Hegel’s conceptual model of the “struggle for recognition,” questions will be posed such as: Who is heard in our city? Who sets the rules? As a reward, participants can enjoy an ice-cold Geist spritzer or a “Democracy Bag.”

Asphalt Dialogues: An Urban Window Performance (6:30 p.m. & 8:30 p.m.): In cooperation with the State University of Music and Performing Arts (HMDK) Stuttgart, performers Antonie Rohdich and Hans Brackrock stage an acoustic exchange directly from the museum’s open windows. A rhythmic dialogue between historical theory and the urban present.

“Jazz History” Meets Popular Electronic Jazz (7:00 p.m.): The Jazz Society Stuttgart e.V., in cooperation with the Hegel-Haus Museum, brings the Linda Kyei Band and actor Steffen “Schortie” Scheumann to the stage. The audience will witness a public rehearsal process that combines the social depth and rhythmic structure of thinkers like Hegel with modern music education.

Short guided tours of the museum (6:00 p.m. & 8:00 p.m.): Our hosts will guide guests through the historic, listed building and provide insight into Hegel’s world.

Light and sound installation by Frischvergiftung (9:00 p.m.): As dusk falls, the artist collective Frischvergiftung transforms the facade of Eberhardstraße 53 into an audiovisual experience.
