Carsten “Erobique” Meyer is a genre all his own. After every bus carrying the latest disco revival has passed him by—and then come right back—over the past 30 years, there’s simply no other way to put it. When word gets out in the big cities that “Erobique is in town,” countless dance-crazy people between the ages of 18 and 80 look forward to sweaty, almost sacred hours filled with improvised disco licks and hair-raising vocal interludes. As Germany’s self-proclaimed—and for now, last—Disco-Punk, the “living disco ball” (FAZ) to break up the monotony of beat-mixed laptop DJ culture and thrill his fans with sweat-inducing dance marathons featuring spontaneous ballad interludes and wildly quoted wedding oldies. Releases are rather rare (Asexy, Acid Jazz, Deck 8); his hits (“Urlaub in Italien,” “Easy Mobeasy,” “Ravedave”) are best enjoyed live and in full color.
