As part of the opening, Angela Steidele will also give a lecture titled“Sahara Sand in the Münsterland:OnAnnette von Droste-Hülshoff’s‘To the Women Writers’ and‘My Profession.’”
Does Droste’s urgent advice in “To the Women Writers in Germany and France”—to always bear in mind ‘pious customs’—count among her most reactionary poems? Or is it more like a Trojan horse through which she smuggles content beyond any “pious morals” into her 1844 poetry collection? A comparison with “My Profession” reveals the answer in “Sahara Sand in the Münsterland.”
