Play description:
I will become a shine. Do you want to know what a shine is?
18-year-old typist Doris leaves her home in the Rhineland and moves to Berlin to become a glamour. She dreams of a life as a celebrity and throws herself into the life of the cosmopolitan city. In her search for luxury, love and success, Doris is confronted with reality - with changing lovers and the fear of poverty.
Then she meets Ernst, with whom she can live for free. If it weren't for his ex-wife, to whom he is still attached...
The play is based on Irmgard Keun's contemporary novel, which was published in 1932 before the National Socialists came to power. The book was a great success in the Weimar Republic before it was banned by the Nazi regime in 1933. In addition to the social and economic difficulties of the time, it highlights the limited opportunities for women at the time, who were often dependent on relationships with men.
The novel was rediscovered at the end of the 1970s and remains a classic of modern literature to this day.
