In the organizer's words:
Albrecht Maurer METROPOLIS
Homage to Theo Jörgensmann
Albrecht Maurer – violin, voice, live electronics
This concert consists of two parts. In the first part, Albrecht Maurer presents his work *Avantourisme*, which is influenced by Theo Jörgensmann. Albrecht Maurer collaborated extensively with clarinetist Theo Jörgensmann—who passed away last year—beginning in the early 1990s. *Avantourisme* is based on musical material he had already notated during that time. He has continued to develop the work since then.
In the second part, Albrecht Maurer performs a live remix of their final joint duo CD, *Metropolis*, which he recorded with Theo Jörgensmann in 2024. *Metropolis* is inspired by Thea von Harbou’s novel and Fritz Lang’s silent film. The quintessential principle—"The heart must be the mediator between the mind and the hands"—is a key tenet guiding the two musicians’ emotional approach to performance. As an additional layer, he will also perform live alongside the remix sounds.
Albrecht Maurer studied violin at the Cologne University of Music and Dance. As a composer, he is largely self-taught, though he also studied with Johannes Fritsch and Klarenz Barlow at the Cologne University of Music and Dance. Albrecht Maurer gained experience in contemporary music and experimental music theater through his intensive collaboration with several composers from Mauricio Kagel’s class. He gained significant experience through his intensive collaboration with Theo Jörgensmann, Kent Carter, and Norbert Rodenkirchen. Albrecht Maurer has written various compositions for jazz ensembles with a chamber music-style lineup as well as for classical ensembles with experience in improvisation.
Albrecht Maurer is the founder and curator of Chamber Remix Cologne. For several years, he has been exploring live remixing, specifically the immediate recording and reworking of musical fragments, which he often generates using his head voice.
