Berlioz: La damnation de Faust
In the organizer's words:
Alchemists at Work
“It’s hard to put into words just how great the chemistry is between me and this orchestra—actually, it’s alchemy!” says Alain Altinoglu, chief conductor, about “his” hr Symphony Orchestra. Fittingly, they’ve chosen a magical, supernatural work for their next visit to the Elbphilharmonie: Inspired by Goethe’s drama, Berlioz creates a treasure trove of diversity in “La damnation de Faust”—somewhere between opera and concert, choral symphony and oratorio, rich in nuances and extremes ranging from hellish depths to heavenly redemption. Hector Berlioz was searching for a format that could bring symphony and opera together into something even greater. The four scenes, featuring an orchestra, chorus, and soloists—here performed by leading figures from the international opera stage—tell the story, as a “dramatic legend,” of an aging Faust who strikes a pact with the devil in exchange for youth and love.
