There are over one and a half million known asteroids in our solar system. Most of them are located in the so-called asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Time and again, however, headlines report on asteroids approaching Earth, and events such as the Koblenz meteorite fall raise the question of whether, in the near or distant future, objects might strike Earth that could cause major destruction—even the devastation of entire continents.
