This outdoor workshop, recognized by the NRW Chamber of Architects, focuses on sketching as a professional tool for the analysis and communication of architecture. It is aimed at architects, interior designers and urban planners and teaches how complex urban scenes can be reduced to clear structures, proportions and perspectives. The focus is on drawing from direct observation in the urban environment.

Participants will learn how to reduce complex scenes to clear basic forms, understand proportion and perspective, and use light, shadow and positive and negative space to draw clearly.

Sketching is seen as a design thinking method that promotes clarity in early design phases, detailed analysis and communication with clients and colleagues.

Course of the training

The event is practice-oriented and follows a clear methodical sequence:

• Live demonstration of an analytical drawing process
• Short thumbnail studies to examine composition and proportion
• Elaboration of a main drawing in an urban context
• Use of light, shadow and scale to enhance spatial clarity
• Comparison of results and discussion of transferability to practice

Learning content

• Analyzing architecture by reducing it to basic forms
• Conscious use of proportion and perspective
• Use of positive and negative forms to control spatial relationships
• Depiction of depth through light and shadow
• Use of drawing as a direct communication and thinking tool in addition to digital methods

Drawing materials (paper, sketch pads, pencils) will be provided.
You can also bring your own materials such as fineliners, markers or watercolors.

Note on weather conditions

The workshop takes place outdoors. In the event of unfavorable weather conditions, the exercises will be carried out at an alternative indoor location in the Medienhafen area, whereby the learning objectives will remain unchanged. The learning objectives remain unchanged.
