“35STREET is a photographic distillation of urban reality—reduced to the essentials: people in the moment,” says photographer Ralf Scherer about the photographs on display here. His works are created in the midst of public spaces, without staging, arising from spontaneous encounters—fleeting, raw, and yet precisely observed. 35STREET does not seek to document, but rather to reveal transitional states: moments in which identity, tension, and emotion manifest uncontrollably.

A clear visual language in black and white: In Scherer’s photographs, the background recedes, the surroundings become a stage—and the person becomes the central bearer of the narrative. His gaze: close and direct, but never intrusive. The images: subtle, yet present. The exhibition brings together selected works from the publication of the same name, 35STREET. Large-format prints reveal what is often overlooked in everyday urban life. Scherer: “The focus is not on the city—but on the people within it.”
