Mark Guiliana is going on tour with his ensemble BEAT MUSIC, and we’re thrilled that it coincides with our anniversary month. Operating in the broad spectrum between jazz and modern beat architecture, the drummer and composer is one of the most exciting figures in the field. Equally at home in acoustic jazz, progressive rock, and experimental electronic music, his approach centers on using rhythm as compositional material. Drums and percussion serve as the starting point for structural and sonic developments.

BEAT MUSIC emerged as a project and ensemble from this ongoing exploration and draws on influences from jazz, electronic music, and experimental approaches. Here, fixed compositional structures are combined with open improvisational processes as well as acoustic and electronic sound materials. Albums such as “Beat Music: The Los Angeles Improvisations” (2014) and “Beat Music! Beat Music! Beat Music!” (2019) demonstrate what can emerge from this process and the sheer joy of playing that it embodies.

This openness also shapes his other work. For over ten years, Guiliana has been releasing his own albums that straddle the line between acoustic jazz quartet performances, electronically influenced, atmospherically open soundscapes, and an experimental exploration of beat and rhythmic structures. As a sought-after collaborator, he has worked in various roles with artists such as St. Vincent, Matt Cameron (Pearl Jam/Soundgarden), Brad Mehldau, M83, Meshell Ndegeocello, and the unforgettable David Bowie.
