Emanuel Mathias

In the artist's words:

Emanuel Mathias is an artist and researcher. In his work, he explores relationships between distance and proximity in interdisciplinary contexts—between the documentary and the speculative, art and society, and humanity and nature. To this end, he employs various forms of expression, including installations, video, photography, publications, and performances.

He studied artistic photography at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, earned his diploma in 2009, and subsequently served as a master student under Tina Bara.

From 2017 to 2024, as part of his Artistic Ph.D. at the Bauhaus University Weimar, he conducted research on the relationships of proximity and distance among biologists who study the behavior of great apes.

Since 2023, he has served as the artistic director of an interdisciplinary research team comprising designers, engineers, and scholars of culture and the arts, which develops exhibition projects for institutions at the intersection of visual arts and science communication.

In addition, he regularly gives lectures, teaches courses, and leads workshops in the field of artistic research.

His works are exhibited both nationally and internationally.
